Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Schultz Dominates as Duhawks Sweep Day One

ST. PAUL, Minn. (DUHAWKS.com) - The Loras women's volleyball team completed a perfect 2–0 day on the first day of the Northwestern Labor Day Tournament with wins over UW-Stout and Concordia. The Duhawks' first match versus the Blue Devils went down to the wire with Loras needing a fifth set victory to secure their first win of 2016. Against the Cobbers, the Duhawks finished all three frames with late scoring runs which led to the three-set sweep. Senior Therese Schultz combined for 32 kills on the day, pacing the Loras attack from the middle.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
UW-STOUT
  • With Loras clinging to a 16–15 advantage in set one, the Duhawks scored five consecutive points to take a commanding 21–15 lead. Loras used this margin to close out set one handedly by a 25–17 final score.
  • The Duhawks continued to roll in the second frame, opening up an early 10–6 lead thanks to four Blue Devil attacking errors. UW-Stout made its push, however, tying the score at 17-all.
  • Loras regained its form towards the end of this set and three consecutive kills from a combination of senior Therese Schultz and sophomore Claire Ritchie finished the set for the Duhawks, 25–21.
  • The Blue Devils jumped out to a big lead in the third set, going on top 12–3.  UW-Stout would not relinquish this margin, winning the third frame 25–13.
  • The fourth set was more of the same from the Blue Devils, as they got out to a 12–4 advantage and cruised to victory, 25–9.
  • With the score level four-all in the last set, Schultz and Loras scored 11 of the last 14 points to take the set, 15–7, and the match, 3–2. Schultz totaled 21 kills in the match, six of which came in the fifth set.
CONCORDIA
  • Trailing 20–19 in set one, Loras ripped off three straight kills, one from Schultz and two from Ritchie, to give the Duhawks a 22–20 advantage.
  • After a Concordia timeout, the Cobbers started on a three-point run of their own, staking claim to a 24–23 lead.
  • The first frame headed into extras with both teams trading points throughout the set. With the score knotted at 27-all, a critical service error from the Cobbers followed by a kill from freshman Carlee Beck capped a frantic set one by a final of 29–27.
  • Loras led by a slim margin in the second set at 11–9 before the Duhawks found their rhythm, scoring six straight to take a 17–9 lead.
  • Concordia cut into the Duhawk advantage using five consecutive points to trim the margin to 18–15, prompting a timeout from head coach Jenna Ness.
  • After the break, Loras scored seven of the next 13 points to finish the set to the tune of 25–21.
  • The Duhawks, facing a sizable early deficit in set three, benefited from a string of three straight Cobber errors and a kill from freshman Kelly Boge to tie the score at 10.
  • With both sides level at 20, Loras leaned on the reliable combination of Ritchie and Schultz to provide two consecutive kills, to open a 22–20 lead.
  • The Duhawks rode this lead to the finish line, winning the set 25–23, as a kill from Schultz put a fitting cap on a 2–0 day one for the Duhawks at the Northwestern Labor Day Tournament.
