DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - Just like any good rivalry, Wednesday's women's tennis battle between Loras and Dubuque came down to the wire, but it was the Spartans (5-3, 3-2 IIAC) who prevailed, winning 5-4. The Duhawks (6-5, 2-3 IIAC) took two of three doubles matches, but conceded four of the singles matches on the day.
LORAS HIGHLIGHTS
- Wins at No. 2 and 3 Doubles sparked Loras out of the gates as sophomore Emma Cooke and junior Ayla Graziano won at the two spot, 8-6, and sophomore McKenna Craff and junior Rachael Molidor won at the three spot, 8-3.
- With the advantage entering singles play, the Duhawks needed three of the six wins to claim victory in the dual.
- Dubuque took a 4-3 lead in the dual after a three set win at No. 5 singles. Shortly after, Craff prevailed in a three-set match of her own at No. 4, winning 6-2, 1-6, 6-3.
- All eyes were on the No. 6 Singles match, featuing Molidor and the Spartans' Naomi Amani. Molidor took the opening frame 7-6 with a 7-3 tiebreaker, but Amani responded with a 7-6 win in the second set with a 7-4 tiebreaker. In what proved to be the most back-and-forth match of the evening, it was Amani who staved off Molidor just enough to win in the third and deciding set, 6-4.
