Women's Volleyball Sweeps Pioneers to Open 2016 Home Season

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The Loras women's volleyball team completed a 3-0 sweep of UW-Platteville to open their 2016 home slate on Wednesday night inside the Athletic & Wellness Center. The Duhawk offense was firing on all cylinders, totaling 35 kills at a .222 clip in three sets. Freshman Michelle Budden led the way for Loras with nine kills, while junior Haley Bergan anchored the backline, totaling 18 digs. The win for the Duhawks extends their home match winning streak to 10, dating back to Sept. 12, 2015.

  • The Pioneers answered the Loras run by scoring eight of the next 10 points, trimming the lead to one before a kill by freshman Michelle Budden put the Duhawks up 16–14.
  • Loras regained its form and used its second multiple-point run of the set, this time six consecutive tallies, to close out UW-Platteville, 25–15 in set one.

SET 2
  • In the second frame, the Duhawk offense started out hot, recording seven kills before the Pioneers were forced to take a timeout trailing 10–4.
  • UW-Platteville whittled the deficit down to two before senior Tara Blake made her way to the service line following a kill from senior Therese Schultz. Blake used a six-point serving run to open up a commanding 19–11 lead for Loras.
  • The Duhawks saw this lead through to the finish line as a kill from Budden gave Loras a 25–17 victory and 2–0 lead in the match.

SET 3
  • The Pioneers led for much of the third set, holding an 18–14 advantage in the latter half of the frame.
  • Three crucial errors at this juncture from UW-Platteville opened the door for the Duhawks, trailing 18–17.
  • After back and forth play, a service ace from junior Morgan Potts evened the score at 21-all and brought the sides level for the first time since 14–14.
  • Loras had two chances at match point before a Pioneer error ended the set, 26–24 for the Duhawks.
