Men's Basketball Holds On for 71-70 Win Over Buena Vista

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The Loras men's basketball team ended a two-game losing skid on Saturday, defeating Buena Vista on the road, 71-70. Seniors Christian Mathis and Justin VanWambeke led the way with 13 points each for the Duhawks, who improved to 15-6 overall and 8-4 in the Iowa Conference.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED 
First Half
  • The game was back and forth through the first eight minutes with both teams trading baskets. Neither team could extend its lead beyond one possession. 
  • Loras opened a 17-12 lead with a 5-0 run after sophomore Josh Ruggles came off a screen to sink a jumper near the free-throw line. 
  • On the ensuing possession, the Duhawks stopped the Beavers and senior Justin VanWambeke drained a 3-pointer to sway the momentum in Loras' favor. 
  • Buena Vista battled back to tie the game at 22-all with 5:38 left in the half.
  • From there, the Beavers went on a 10-2 run to open up a 32-24 lead forcing a timeout from head coach Chris Martin. 
  • The Duhawks responded out of the timeout, finishing the half on an 8-2 run to go into the locker room trailing 34-32.

Second Half
  • Buena Vista used the halftime break to their advantage and came out of the gates red hot from the floor.
  • In the first 7:30 of the half, the Beavers were 7-of-8 from the field, which propelled them to their largest lead of the game at, 53-42. 
  • Buena Vista kept a healthy distance and held the lead for the majority of the second half.
  • Freshman Matt Dacy-Seijo's 3-pointer at the 3:01 mark cut the Beavers' lead to one at 66-65.
  • On Loras' next possession, VanWambeke made 1-of-2 from the line to level the game at 66-all with 2:12 remaining in the half.
  • With less than 90 seconds remaining in the half, senior Christian Mathis sunk a 3-pointer off a screen on the wing in front of the Duhawk bench to give his team a 69-66 lead, giving Loras its first lead since the 5:26 mark of the first half.
  • A layup from the Beavers was followed by two made free-throws from sophomore Ryan DiCanio and to hold the Duhawk lead at 71-70.
  • With under 10 seconds left, senior Danny Quinn came up empty at the free throw line and Buena Vista rebounded the ball and brought the ball up the floor before calling a timeout with 2.9 seconds left. The Beavers came up short off a sideline out of bounds play and Loras held on for the victory.

  • Loras converted 17 Buena Vista turnovers into 24 points and edged Buena Vista 9-3 in second chance points
  • The Duhawk bench totaled 26 points to the Beavers' 14
  • Buena Vista owned the advantage in the paint, totaling 34 points to Loras' 24
  • Loras improved to 15-6 overall and 8-4 in the IIAC

After missing Wednesday's game against Wartburg, George returned to the hardwood and finished with 12 points off the bench and was 2-of-4 from beyond the arc.

Loras is set to return to Lillis Court next Wednesday against Central, who defeated Wartburg on Saturday, 91-86. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
