Duhawks Fall to Northwestern in Season Opener

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The Loras women's lacrosse team (0-1) dropped its opening match of the 2017 season to Northwestern (2-1), 10-7. Freshman Olivia Flynn and senior Anna Schwalbe each recorded three goals to pace the Duhawk offense. Junior Ashley McGee finished the match with nine saves in goal and a save percentage of .474.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED 
First Half
  • Schwalbe got the Duhawks started off strong as the Kenosha, Wis. native scored Loras' first two goals of the 2017 season.
  • Northwestern responded with back-to-back goals to open a 4-2 lead with 10:55 remaining in the half.
  • Loras cut the Eagles' lead to one two minutes later on Flynn's first career goal as she weaved back and forth through the Northwestern defense before slotting her shot past the goalkeeper.
  • The Eagles scored three of the next four goals and opened a three-goal advantage at 7-4 with 1:31 on the game clock. 
  • Flynn brought Loras within one as the freshman scored two goals in the last 70 seconds of the half.
  • Northwestern took a slim 7-6 lead into the halftime break.

Second Half
  • McGee kept the Eagle lead at one with a series of big saves in the opening nine minutes. The second of which came right on the doorstep to harness the Northwestern attack early on.
  • The Eagles eventually broke through with 21:13 remaining for an 8-6 lead.
  • Loras struggled to convert offensively for a majority of the second half and was held goalless until Schwalbe brought the Duhawks within one at 8-7 on a free position goal with 8:51 remaining.
  • Down the stretch, Northwestern kept the Loras offense in check, limiting the Duhawks to five shots and two on target, while tacking on goals from Talia Sherry and Jordyn Broberg for the 10-7 win.

Olivia Flynn I Once the Apple Valley, Minn. native became accustomed to the collegiate game, she made her presence known, finishing with three goals on eight shots, while collecting 13 ground and recording five caused turnovers.

The Duhawks travel to Waukesha, Wis. next Thursday March 9 when they face Carroll in non-conference action. The Pioneers enter with a 1-1 record after defeating Northland, 17-4, on Saturday. First draw is scheduled for 7 p.m.
