Baseball Slips Against Dubuque

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The Loras baseball team (13-21, 6-13 IIAC) dropped the first two games of the series to Dubuque on Saturday by scores of 4-1 and 2-0. Sophomore Austin Konagel picked up his 19th RBI of the season in the first game for the Duhawks' only run of the afternoon. Junior Brad Schwind pitched five innings in game two, allowing two hits and one run.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Game One
  • After a walk loaded the bases in the bottom of the second, Eric Hall singled up the middle to give the Spartans the 1-0 lead.
  • Dubuque doubled its lead to 2-0 after a fielder's choice drove in the runner in the bottom of the third.
  • In the next half inning, sophomore Austin Konagel singled to score sophomore Danny Paluch and cut the Spartan lead in half at 2-1.
  • Dubuque kicked off the sixth inning with a double by Austin McWhite followed by an RBI single by Thomas Kempf to regain the two-run lead.
  • The Spartans executed the suicide squeeze in the eighth inning to plate an insurance run heading to the ninth.
  • Loras mustered a pinch-hit single from senior Thomas Johnson in the ninth, but a fielder's choice ended the game and gave Dubuque the victory, 4-1.

Game Two
  • The Spartans carried their momentum into game two and struck for the go-ahead run in the home half of the first.
  • After a rocky first, junior Brad Schwind settled into his groove and held Dubuque scoreless over the next four innings.
  • In the top of the fourth, Loras drew back-to-back one out walks. The Spartans worked out of the jam by retiring the next two hitters in order to end the inning.
  • Dubuque capitalized on a Loras fielding error to add to its lead in the bottom of the sixth
  • The Duhawks were set down in order, all via strikeout, in the ninth to end the game.

FRIEDMAN GROUP PLAYERS OF THE GAME
Austin Konagel I The third baseman went 2-for-3 at the plate in game one, bringing home the Duhawks only run. Konagel came up with the timely hit with two outs to get Loras back in the game.
Brad Schwind I The Hoffmann Estates, Ill. native went five innings in game two, allowing two hits and one earned run while striking out one. Schwind gave up the early run, but suffocated the Spartan offense after that to keep his team in the game.
