Duhawks Sweep St. Joseph's to Open Florida Trip

AUBURNDALE, FLA. (Duhawks.com) - The Loras baseball team opened its annual spring trip to Florida on Thursday with a doubleheader sweep against St. Joseph's (L.I.), winning 16-5 and 3-2. Richard Bryza led the Duhawks in game one, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs while Tyler Tomaka earned his second save of the season in game two.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Game One
- The Golden Eagles opened the scoring with a two-out RBI triple and later tacked on another run to take a 2-0 lead
- Loras responded immediately with seven runs in the top of the second, which started with a two-RBI double by Carlos Garrido … The other five runs were scored off a combination of RBI singles, a sacrifice fly, a fielder's choice and an error
- St. Joseph's cut the deficit to three in the home half of the third
- The Duhawks extended its lead to nine in the top of the fourth, which started with a two-RBI single from Bryza
- Ryan Koester slammed a bases-clearing triple in the sixth inning, pushing Loras lead to 11 at 16-5
- Brad Schwind improved to 2-0 this season, throwing 6.0 innings while striking out nine … Tanner Fallon provided an inning of relief, striking out one

Game Two
- The Duhawks loaded the bases in the bottom of the first, but only managed to score one run off a sacrifice fly by Danny Weis
- In the top of the third, the first four batters reached base for the Eagles following two hits and two walks … Two runs came across to score as St. Joseph's took a 2-1 lead … Hovey set down the final three hitters on strikes to end the rally
- After four scoreless innings, Loras broke through in the sixth with back-to-back RBI doubles by Cole Thompson and Luke Fennelly
- Leading 3-2, head coach Carl Tebon put the ball in the hand of his closer, Tomaka, who locked down the win with a pair of strikeouts in the seventh to seal the win
