STORM LAKE, Iowa (Oct. 11, 2019) – Loras College women's volleyball sophomore libero
Krystal Tranel etched herself into the history books on Friday evening as her 41 digs helped the Duhawks improve to 16-5 overall and 3-0 in American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) play with a 3-2 win against Buena Vista University.
Loras commanded the first set thanks to six kills from
Kelly Boge and the Duhawks' defense forcing multiple attacking errors by the Beavers. Loras led by as many as 14 points en route to a 25-10 win. The Duhawks opened the second set with a 3-0 lead but Buena Vista quickly tied the score 6-6 and started what would become a back-and-forth affair. Two kills by
Jackie Alberto and a block from the junior outside hitter and
Kendra Cave gave Loras the 9-7 lead which the Beavers shortly turned in their favor to take a 15-13 lead. A four-point run for Buena Vista forced Loras to take a timeout, trailing 22-7 and unfortunately, the Duhawks could not recover, dropping the second set, 25-20.
Buena Vista opened the third set with a 12-8 lead but the Duhawks did not fret as Boge sparked a momentous nine point run and Cave and
Jessalyn Roling put up kills of their own. Boge and
Kayla Kinney helped extend the lead 20-13 and despite a late comeback effort by the Beavers, a kill from Cave finalized the third set in favor of the Duhawks, 25-21.
The Beavers showed they were willing to take the match to five sets, opening the fourth set with a 12-8 lead. Despite four errors to put Loras within striking distance midway through the set, three service aces and 17 kills from Buena Vista handed Loras a fourth set, 25-17 loss.
Going into a fifth set, Loras has been statistically strong and kills from Boge and Kinney as well as back-to-back service aces by Tranel put Loras ahead early, 5-2. The Beavers would only come within one point of the lead as
Talia McAtee served up two aces and Alberto, Cage and
Moira Mixan added kills to help the Duhawks top the Beaver 15-10 to win the match.
Tranel's 41 digs were the highlight of the box score as she now ranks second all-time for five-set single-match digs. Boge had 14 kills and Kinney posted a double-double with 12 kills and 24 digs while Both Mixan and Tranel tallied three service aces.
Loras plays again on Saturday, Oct. 12 at Nebraska Wesleyan University. Match time is set for 2 P.M.
