WATERLOO, Iowa (Oct. 12, 2019) – Closing out a historic fall season, the Loras College women's tennis team saw two individuals and one doubles pair medal at the American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) Individual Championship on Saturday.
The freshmen pair of
Sara Backus and
Lauren Diiulio were the bronze medalists in the B-flight doubles. Backus and Diiulio advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Alyssa Guse and Ambriel Jacobs from Wartburg College, 8-3. In the quarterfinals, they defeated Sarah Schim and Alex Giggs from Central College, 8-6. The duo took a slight setback, falling 8-6 at the hands of Anna Spencer and Aurora Schossow of Luther College, but rebounded to defeat Megan Grimm and Jalen DenHartog from the Norse, 8-5, to place third.
In the B-flight for singles, the Duhawks sent three players to the quarterfinals as Backus won her opening match against Wartburg's Jamie Knox, 8-4,
Isabel Schwabe defeated Wexenia Sweeney from Coe College, 8-1, Diiulio defeated Wartburg's Jacobs, 8-3. Backus and Schwabe advanced to the second rounds with wins against two players from Central in the second round and wound up playing each other in the third-place match with Schwabe winning 6-1, 6-2.
Loras saw success in the C-flight of singles as well with
Molly Monson winning her opening match against Wartburg's Amber Laube, 8-4 and
Noely Baumann won her match against Samantha Goodger from Simpson College, 8-2.
Maddie Smith won her first match against Breeana Runyon from Coe, 8-1 and Mariana Bayona-Paez won her match against Katie Wilson from Central with an 8-0 sweep. Bayona-Paez won her quarterfinal match against Emily Rubbelke from Luther, 8-7 by a 9-7 tie breaker and won her third place match against the University of Dubuque's Lauren Colon, 6-1, 6-2.
Loras concluded the season with an impressive 10-1, 7-1 A-R-C record and look to continue the success in the spring.
