ANGOLA, Ind. (Dec. 15, 2019)- The RV Loras men's basketball team (8-2) rebounded after a loss in the first day of this weekend opener, and battled the entire 40 minutes to take a win in Angola against the home team, Trine University, 72-70.
The Duhawks came out of the gate ready to play with a forced turnover, and quick jumper by
Rowan McGowen. Trine battled back though with a basket, which seemed to be the theme of the first half, with both teams not allowing the other to pull ahead too far for too long. However, with 7 minutes left in the first half, Matt Dacy-Sejo started the Duhawks scoring spree with a fast break, three pointer. After that the Duhawks went on an unanswered nine point run, with help from team high scorers for the night,
JT Ford and
Jordan Matthews, giving Loras the lead 46-42, going into halftime.
Loras did not let up going in to the second half, with a quick steal by Dacy-Sejo to give the Duhawks possession. After that, Loras went scoreless for five minutes, allowing Trine to take the lead by one, 52-51, with 12 minutes left in the game. Then with five minutes left,
Cole Navigato forced a Trine timeout after a quick two baskets to pull the Duhawks ahead, with Matthews continuing to hammer down on the Thunder with two more baskets after the timeout. Two more jumpers by Ford then secured the Duhawks lead while they held the Thunder scoreless for the last three minutes of the game.
Both Ford and Matthews had a team-high of 10 rebounds each. Ford also had a team-high for points, totaling 25 and going 12 for 19, to assist with the Duhawks victory. McGowen tallied 12 points with 5 rebounds. Matthews, Dacy-Sejo, and Ford all shot 50 percent from behind the arc.
The Duhawks (8-2) return home after the holidays for a match up against Monmouth College on Sunday, December 29 with tip off scheduled for 1 P.M.
