August 30, 2019 (Duhawks.com) - The Loras College men's soccer team defeated Knox College 3-0 in their season opener Friday afternoon in the Rock Bowl.
Loras ended the first half with eleven shots and traded possession for much of the first half.
Nick Pechous had the best attempt of the half with a late header that was saved by Knox's goalie. Â
"We did what we expect to do, wear teams down and hope to get goals late," said head coach
Dan Rothert. "All three goals came from bench players and both assists. I was excited to see that."
Nick Janulis gave the Prairie Fire their best shot of the night in the 66th minute, sending a header into the box just saved by goalie
Jack Monson. Ten minutes later,
Zeke Kyoore got the action started for the Duhawks after heading his first goal of the season off the back post in the 76th minute off of a cross from
Leo Bellingeri, giving the Duhawks the 1-0 lead.Â
Jose Melo joined in on the scoring, fighting through a pair of defenders near the top of the 18 in a one-on-one. Melo then chipped his shot high and above the oncoming goalkeeper, thwarting off two defenders to put Loras up 2-0 in the 85th minute.
Kyoore secured the brace after he notched the final goal in the 88th minute thanks to
Raudel Fierro's give-and-go, resulting in a one-on-one between Kyoore and the keeper to secure the win for the Duhawks.
Loras will face non-conference opponent Benedictine University on Tuesday, Sept. 3. First kick is scheduled for 5 p.m. inside the Rock Bowl and links to live in-game coverage can be found
