FOX POINT, Wis. (Aug. 31, 2019) – Highlighted by winning performances by the freshmen, the Loras College women's tennis team won its opening two matches of the 2019 season, coming away with a hard-fought 5-4 win on the road against the Milwaukee School of Engineering in the morning and an 8-1 rout of Elmhurst College later in the afternoon on Friday.

Against the Raiders, the Duhawks found themselves down 2-1 after doubles play despite an 8-4 win from Maddie Smith and Samantha Flaningam at the No. 3 position. Isabel Schwabe tied the score 2-2 with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at the No. 5 singles but MSOE's Daniela Svedova gave her team the lead with a win at No. 1.

Noely Baumann defeated Olivia Boden at No. 6 singles to tie the score yet again only to have the Raiders regain the lead after the No. 3 singles match went to a tie-breaker. Meghann Long's 6-4, 6-1 win at the No. 2 spot meant the teams were knotted again but Sara Backus scored the team a much needed 7-6, 7-3 win at No. 4 singles to give Loras its first win of the season.

In the afternoon match against Elmhurst, Loras swept the doubles round, as Audrey Hinz and Baumann defeated Ysabel Gonzaga and Bailey Eckstrand at the No. 1 spot, 8-5, and Backus and Diiulio defeated Nina Pasquini and Sydney Misiek at No. 2 doubles with an 8-6 score. Long and Maddie Smith won their match against Dacey Maglaque and June Bering 8-5 at the No. 3 position.

The Duhawks held the lead throughout the singles matches as Schwabe, Long, Diiulio, Backus and Baumann all won their respective matches. Although the Bluejays took the win at No. 1 singles, Loras had long since sealed the win and improved to 2-0 on the day.

The Duhawks (2-0) play their home opener at the Tucker Tennis Courts on Saturday, Sept. 7, hosting American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) opponents Central College at 9 a.m. and Simpson College at 1 p.m.
