Box Score

WAVERLY, Iowa (Sept. 10, 2019) – Continuing on the best start to the season in nearly ten years, the Loras College women's tennis team defeated the 2018 American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) regular season champions Wartburg College on Tuesday night in a 5-4 battle, marking the first time in over a decade the Duhawks scored a win against the Knights.

The Duhawks had a 2-1 advantage following doubles play to open the match, with Meghann Long and Maddie Smith defeated Olivia Phillips and Alyssa Guse 8-5 at No. 3 doubles before Audrey Hinz and Noely Baumann took an 8-7, 10-8 win at the No. 1 position against Wartburg's Madison Overmann and Hannah Fox.

A back and forth battle ensued during singles play as Wartburg came back to tie the match 2-2 with a win at the No. 4 Singles. Isabel Schwabe put the Duhawks ahead with her win at No. 5 singles against Jamie Knox, taking her match 7-6, 6-0.

Loras pulled ahead 4-2 with a win from Baumann at No. 6, but the Knights took the win at No. 1 and No. 3 singles to tie the score 4-4 and put it all on the line for Meghann Long at the No. 2 position. Long defeated Hannah Fox 6-0 in the first set but was forced to play catch up in the second set and ultimately bring the nail biter of a match to a tiebreaker. It was a fitting end for a high-intensity matchup and was even sweeter for the Duhawks as Long won 7-6 to maintain Loras' perfect record going into the heart of conference play.

Loras (5-0, 3-0 A-R-C) looks to continue the streak as the Duhawks host Buena Vista University and Nebraska Wesleyan University on Saturday, Sept. 14. Matches are set for 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
