DUBUQUE, Iowa (Sept. 10, 2019) – After being swept in their last appearance, the Loras College women's volleyball team jumped back into their groove to sweep Augustana College (3-6) at home.
The Duhawks started the scoring early, and did not let up until they came away with the victory. Loras opened the first set with a quick 14-4 lead with the help of kills by
Jessalyn Roling,
Moira Mixan, and
Kayla Kinney. After trailing by ten, Augustana started to chip away at the Duhawk lead and bring the first set score to 17-10 in favor of Loras. The Duhawks went on a 5-0 run to take a 12-point lead due to three attack errors and two service aces. Loras took the first set by a score of 25-12.
Augustana took a quick 3-1 lead to begin set two, but the American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) Offensive Player of the Week,
Kayla Kinney, grabbed three kills to lead the Duhawks on a 9-0 run to take the lead. Augustana took little time to respond and brought the deficit to only two as Loras led 14-12. The Duhawks sparked again with the help of back-to-back blocks by
Jackie Alberto to lead by six. The Vikings responded again and tied the game 20-20 which forced Loras to take a timeout.
Kendra Cave came out of the timeout for the Duhawks to grab a kill to put Loras up two and eventually take set two 25-22.
The Duhawks came out strong in the final set to take a fast 10-3 lead. After an Augustana timeout, Loras continued their scoring to lead 16-4 after a kill by Alberto and a pair of kills by Kinney.
Abby Allgeyer racked up three kills late in the set to extend the Duhawk lead to 16. Loras took set three with help from
April Grostic and
Molly Chapman at the service and at the net, along with
Jade Casper who picked up the final kill for the Duhawks to win 25-9.
Kinney finished with a team high 13 kills while Roling finished with 27 assists. Roling and Alberto both added three blocks and
Krystal Tranel came up big on defense with 15 digs.
The Duhawks (8-2) picked up their fourth sweep of the season and will look to bring the momentum to their next match on Friday, Sept. 13 when they host Augsburg University at 7:00 PM.
