Sept. 13, 2019 – Lillis Court was full of energy on Friday night as the Loras College women's volleyball team defeated its third Top-25 opponent in the past week, recovering from a loss in the first set to claim the next three against No. 17-ranked Augsburg University and put the Auggies' eight-match winning streak to an end.
Augsburg (8-2) took the lead to start the match with two kills and an ace but the Duhawks soon tied the set 4-4 with kills from
Kendra Cave and
Kelly Boge. The Auggies regained a 9-7 lead but
Kayla Kinney and
Jackie Alberto promptly evened with kills off the hands of
Jessalyn Roling. The Auggies found momentum later in the set, slowly pulling away from the Duhawks and extending the lead 20-14, forcing Loras to call a timeout. Despite a block from Boge and Kinney and two kills for the Duhawks, Augsburg held on to take the first set 25-17.
Moira Mixan put the Duhawks on the board with a kill and helped Loras to a four point run with a service ace for a 12-7 lead over the Auggies. From there on out, Loras extended its lead to nine off kills from Kinney and Alberto and an ace from
Krystal Tranel. Two kills by the Auggies were not enough as the Duhawks swiftly took the second set, 25-14.
Although the Auggies took an early 4-1 lead to start the third set, Loras quickly doubled-up Augsburg in the third set with a 12-6 lead and never gave its opponent the chance to hold the advantage. A .303 team hitting percentage as well as four kills from Cave and three each from Kinney and Boge helped the Duhawks keep the Auggies at bay with a 25-22 win.
Augsburg struck first in the fourth set and took a 3-2 lead which did not last long as the Duhawks tacked on three points with kills from Kinney and Alberto to lead 5-3. Back-to-back errors by the Auggies, a pair of kills from Alberto and an ace from Kinney gave the Duhawks a 10-5 advantage and forced Augsburg to call a timeout. Loras held on the lead during the heart of the match, but the Auggies struck back with a vengeance, tacking eight-straight points on the board to lead 21-18 and force Loras to play catch up. A service error by Augsburg gave the ball back to the Duhawks and set
Abby Allgeyer up for the kill, but the Auggies responded with a kill to bring the ball back to their service line. Augsburg gave up a point off an attack error and set
Talia McAtee up to serve, resulting in kills from Allgeyer, Boge and the match winner from Cave to give Loras the 25-22 win in the fourth and take down yet another ranked opponent.
Alberto led the team with 14 kills while Kinney and Cave tallied 11 each. Boge and Kinney each had three blocks and Kinney also led the team with 18 kills. As a team, the Duhawks ended the night with 65.5 points, 57 kills, and 67 digs.
