Loras Upsets No. 11 Gusties at Loras Invite

The Loras College women's volleyball team moved to 6-1 after defeating St. Norbert and No. 11 Gustavus Adolphus Friday night at the Loras Invitational.

Loras swept St. Norbert (25-22, 26-24, 26-24) thanks to performances from seniors Kelly Bogeand Kayla Kinney, who led the Duhawks with eight kills. Sophomore Moira Mixan finished with five service aces while junior Jackie Alberto tallied four blocks.

After trading blows for much of the first set, the Duhawks closed the set 25-22. In the second set, the Green Knights went on a 4-0 run to take a 18-17 lead. A pair of errors by St. Norbert allowed Loras to level at 20-20. The Duhawks closed the second set after an error by St. Norbert.

Loras went on a 6-0 run to start the third set. The Green Knights battled back to level at 13-all. Back-to-back kills by Kinney and sophomore Kendra Cave allowed the Duhawks to close the match 26-24.

The Duhawks traded blows with No. 11 Gustavus Adolphus, winning the first, third and fourth sets (25-19, 17-25, 28-26, 25-21). Kayla Kinney led the charge with 17 kills, while Loras held a 57-49 kill advantage.

Leading 19-16, the Duhawks earned set point at 24-18 following a double block by Roling and Alberto. The Gusties flipped the script and stole the momentum after a 10-5 run for a 20-15 lead and closed on a 5-0 run to even the match at 1-1.

Loras pulled away in the third set after Gustavus Adolphus held set point at 26-25 before a 3-0 run resulted in a 28-26 win for the Purple & Gold.

The momentum didn't last for long as the Gusties powered back for a 10-7 advantage. Before too long, the Duhawks gathered themselves and fought back to level ground at 15-all before a 10-6 run ended the match, 25-21.

Loras will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 7 against non-conference opponent Washington University in St. Louis. First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m.
