Sept. 7, 2019 – The Loras College women's volleyball team split a pair of matches on Day 2 of the Loras Invite, starting with its second five-set battle against a top-25 team in as many matches against No. 25-ranked Washington University in St. Louis (6-3) before dropping a 3-0 decision to Dominican University (5-2) in the nightcap.

Loras took a 9-5 lead off a four-point run early in the first set after a kill from Kayla Kinney and back-to-back kills from Abby Allgeyer, forcing the Bears to call a timeout. Loras continued to hold the lead until two service aces and an unfortunate error by the Duhawks shifted the score in favor of WashU. Both teams continued to trade points until a kill from Allgeyer and a match-high .412 hitting percentage for the team sparked a six-point run to win the set 25-20.

The Duhawks started off on a hot-streak in the second set, first with a kill from Boge before Moira Mixan served up an ace to lead 3-0. But the momentum was quickly brought to a halt when the Bears scored four-straight points to lead 6-4 and later extended the lead 11-7, forcing Loras to take a timeout. A block from Allgeyer and Jackie Alberto helped the Duhawks on a five-point run to cut the score, 13-12, but Loras would not see the lead again as the Bears' efficient offense accounted for a .255 hitting percentage and a 25-23 win.

The third set was all about WashU as the Bears took control of the set early and never let go. Loras tried to get back in the set with kills from Allgeyer, Kinney and Kendra Cave to bring Loras within one midway through the set, the Bears' clean offense only committed three errors en-route to a .312 hitting percentage and 25-20 win.

The Duhawks made sure it was WashU who would have to play catch up as Boge and Cave blocked the Bears' first attempt in the fourth set and soon had an 11-8 lead. WashU hit three-straight points to tie it 11-11 but four kills from Kinney and a balanced attack by Loras led to a 25-19 win and take the No. 25-ranked Bears to five sets.

The energy inside Lillis Court was electric after the Duhawks took a 6-1 lead in the fifth set and soon doubled up WashU, 10-5 following kills from Kinney and Cave. The Bears could not recover from their early deficit and the Duhawks forced the attack error by its opponent, winning the fifth set 15-13 to take the match.

Boge had a team-high 17 kills while Kinney tallied 16 and Allgeyer had 15 kills. Boge also led the team with six of the Duhawks' nine blocks and Kyrstal Tranel had 24 digs.

Loras had a quick turnaround to play Dominican in the nightcap, but struggled to gain momentum despite taking a 2-0 lead and soon trailed 15-9. A service error by Dominican ended the streak and set up Boge for a kill off the hands of Jessalyn Roling, but the Stars went on a five-point run with four kills and a block to lead 20-11. Kills from Alberto, Allgeyer, and Boge brought Loras within four, but it was not enough as Dominican won the first set, 25-21.

In the second set, both teams stayed close, trading points until the Duhawks scored three-straight to lead 9-6 thanks to kills from Cave and Alberto. The Duhawks tacked on three more points to lead 12-7 and force Dominican to call a timeout, but the Stars added six points late in the set to pull ahead 21-18 before Kinney halted the momentum with a kill. The effort was short lived before Dominican scored four-straight to end the set, 25-19.

Dominican scored early in the third set but three-straight kills from Kinney helped keep the Duhawks right on their heels and eventually pull ahead 21-20 at the critical point in the set. Unfortunately, two errors by Loras opened the door for the Stars to hit two kills and force a bad set by the Duhawks to win the set, 25-23, and win the match.

It was Kinney again leading the team with kills, tallying ten, as well as a team-high ten digs, while Boge had three blocks. Both teams were deadlocked with four blocks each but the Stars' serving was the strength with six aces.

Loras (7-2) returns to Lillis Court to host Augustana College on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. Links to live in-match coverage can be found HERE.
