Sept. 7, 2019 – The Loras College women's tennis team maintained the perfect start to the season, winning the first two matches at home for 2019 with an 8-1 rout of Simpson College and an 8-1 victory against Central College in the afternoon.

Against Simpson (0-2), the Duhawks led 2-1 after doubles play, as Sara Backus and Lauren Diiulio defeated Kennedi Wright and Samantha Goodger 8-1 at the No. 2 spot and Meghann Long and Maddie Smith scored an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles against Megan Grubb and Lorin Miller. Loras swept the singles matches, with Long, Diiulio, Backus and Isabel Schwabe winning 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 2, 3, 4, and 5 positions, respectively. Noely Baumann defeated Miller at No. 6 singles by a score of 6-1, 6-1 and Audry Hinz won her match at No. 1 against Emily King, 6-3, 6-1.

The Duhawks continued the trend against Central (2-2), scoring their first team win against the Dutch in more than a decade. Loras scored wins in all three doubles matches and saw tiebreakers at the No. 2, 3 and 4 singles matches. At the No. 2 position, Long defeated Maddie Hartley in the first set, 7-6 and fell 6-4 in the second set, but rebounded in the tiebreaker to defeat her opponent 10-6.

At No. 3 singles, Diiulio squared off against Bronwyn Metclaff, dropping the first set 6-4 before taking the second 7-6 and the tiebreaker 11-9 to win her second match of the day. Backus suffered a 6-0 loss to Katie Larson in the first set at the No. 4 position, but won the second set 6-3 before turning the tables on her opponent with a 6-0 win in the tiebreaker.

Loras (4-0) continues A-R-C play on the road at Wartburg College on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 4 p.m.
