URBANDALE, Iowa (Oct. 22, 2020) –The Loras College women's tennis team battled unfavorable weather and site changes on Thursday but came away 1-1 on the day, splitting a pair of road matches with a 5-4 win against Simpson College (7-4, 5-3 A-R-C) in Urbandale, Iowa before falling to Central College (5-3, 5-3 A-R-C) in Pella, 7-1.
The Duhawks started with a 2-1 lead after doubles play following an 8-0 sweep at the No.3 position by
Clair Moore and
Isabel Schwabe against Donni Kinghorn and Aubrey Ocheltree and an 8-3 win by
Sara Backus and
Lauren Diiulio at the No. 2 spot against Megan Grubb and Kennedi Wright.
Loras quickly extended the lead 4-1 with a win from Backus against Ocheltree at No. 6 singles (6-0, 6-0) and a win from Moore at No. 5 singles against Kinghorn (6-3, 6-3). The Storm broke the streak for a moment with a win at the No. 1 position until a win from Diiulio at the No. 4 sealed the Duhawks' win after she defeated Wright 6-0, 6-3 to put Loras up 5-2.
Against Central in the afternoon, Schwabe and Moore battled through a tough No. 3 doubles match against Sarah Schrim and Alex Griggs, but fell 9-8 as the Dutch swept doubles action. Moore rebounded in singles play and defeated Katie Larson at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-2, and Diiulio forced the tiebreaker at No. 4 against Maddie Hartley, but ultimately fell 6-2, 3-6, 4-6.
Loras (3-2, 3-2 A-R-C) will travel to Nebraska Wesleyan University on Saturday, Oct. 24 for a 2 P.M. matchup against the Prairie Wolves.
