WATERLOO, Iowa (Oct. 31, 2020) – The Loras College women's tennis team closed the fall campaign with a down-to-the wire matchup against Wartburg College on Saturday, making a comeback run in singles play but coming up short in a 5-4 loss to the Knights at Byrnes Park Tennis Courts.
Wartburg (10-1) won the No. 1 doubles match to open the day but
Lauren Diiulio and
Sara Backus tied the score 1-1 with an 8-5 win against Alyssa Guse and Ambriel Jacobs. The Knights claimed the No. 3 match to pull ahead and lead 2-1 going into singles play.
Loras faced an uphill battle in singles play as the Knights grew the lead 4-1 with wins at No. 1 and 2.
Clair Moore helped swing the momentum back in favor of the Duhawks with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Sydney Powers at No. 5 and
Sara Backus followed suit with a 6-3, 6-2 win against Jacobs at No. 6. Diiulio's 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 tie-breaker win at No. 4 singles against Guse knotted the score 4-4 with one match to go, featuring
Isabel Schwabe against Sydney Rottinghaus at the No. 3 position.
Schwabe rebounded from a first set loss to win the second set in extra points, 7-6, but fell in the tie-breaker, 6-2.
The Duhawks finish a tumultuous fall season with a record of 4-3 and now focus on the spring season and chasing the team title in 2021.
