Duhawks Fall to Griffins and Maroons

IMPERIAL, MO. (Feb. 29,2020) – The Loras College baseball team (0-4) first faced Fontbonne University (5-4) where they came up short by a final score of 8-1. In the second game, the Duhawks went up against the University of Chicago (1-0) falling 5-1.

In the first game, the Duhawks found themselves down just 1-0 after four innings and tied the game up in the top of the fifth after Max Cullen hit an RBI single scoring Joe Egan and advancing Luke Fennelly to third. Fontbonne regained a commanding lead in the bottom of the sixth inning scoring five runs to go ahead 7-1 heading into the top of the seventh, The Griffins homered in the bottom of the seventh to go-ahead 8-1.

The Griffins went three up, three down in the bottom of the eighth inning as all three batters grounded out. The Duhawks saw four different pitchers on the mound with Wanninger closing things out for Loras.

In the second game, Chicago got off to a hot start with two runs in the top of the first. Loras answered with one run in the bottom of the inning off an RBI double from Bill Luzzo bringing home Egan. In the top of the fifth inning, Chicago scored one more run off an RBI single and added its final run in the top of the seventh off another RBI single. The Duhawks held Chicago scoreless in the final two innings of the game.

The Duhawks finished the game with six hits while Curtis Lilienthal faced 22 batters striking out three of them. Hunter Fallon faced 14 batters striking out five while Davis Pasco finished the game for the Duhawks on the mound. Egan finished the game 2-3 at the plate while Church went 2-4.

The Duhawks play one game on Saturday, March 7 against Knox College in Decatur, Ill. at 4 P.M.
