Feb. 5, 2020 – Returning home after a week long trip on the East coast, the Loras College men's volleyball team (4-2) took the three-set sweep against the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons (4-3) on Wednesday and remain undefeated at Lillis Court.
The Duhawks opened the first set ahead 9-5 with kills from
Jake Filotto,
Dorian Fiorenza, and
Ian Walsh and were able to extend the lead to13-8 after Fiorenza served up an ace. Concordia Wisconsin rallied back with three straight points to cut the Duhawks' lead to two, but Loras soon regained control and pulled ahead 18-13 after Walsh came up with a kill and a block and
Patrick Hollander added a sneaky attack at the net. The Duhawks closed out the set with kills from Walsh, Fiorenza and
David Beach and took the set with a block from Filotto and
Max Ellenbecker to win 25-17.
Both teams struggled with errors in the opening points, causing a back and forth affair that soon shifted momentum towards Concordia Wisconsin with a 6-3 lead. The Duhawks were able to tie the score 8-8 after Fiorenza came up with a kill, but the Falcons again pulled ahead off a six-point streak to lead 15-10. The Duhawks remained patient and took their run when it mattered most, shutting out the Falcons for the final five points of the set to win 25-21.
The third set was yet again another close contest as both teams traded the lead four times before two kills from Walsh and a service ace by Filotto put Loras ahead 16-14. The Falcons challenged back, looking to regain the lead, but hot hitting from Fiorenza and Filotto and tactful serving by Hollander gave Loras the 22-17 advantage and the chance to close the set for the win. A service error gave the serve back to the Falcons, but Hollander found Filotto just as had been the case throughout the match for a kill to end the set 25-19 and give Loras the home court win.
Filotto had a team-high 16 kills as well as two blocks and eight digs. Fiorenza added 11 kills and two blocks while Hollander had 36 assists and two service aces. Loras had a match-high 17 kills in the third set with a 0.364 hitting percentage.
The Duhawks have a quick turnaround as they head on the road to St. Norbert College on Friday, Feb. 7 to face the Green Knights at 7 P.M.
