CLERMONT, Fla. (March 7, 2020) – In its final day in Florida the Loras College softball team was clipped by Geneva College (PA.) by a final score of 10-5 before facing The Catholic University of America were the Duhawks came up short 11-6. Loras finished its 12 game stint in Florida with an even 6-6 record.
The Golden Tornadoes got off to a hot start scoring two runs in the top of the first one of which was unearned. Â Abigail Bergholz got things started for the Duhawks in the bottom of the second inning with a single to right field while Madison Doubek walked two at bats later. Ellie Schill also walked loading the bases bringing Gabriella Garcia to the plate. The pitcher for the Golden Tornadoes struggled to find the strike zone yet again as Garcia walked to first base bringing Abigail Jones who was pinch running for Bergholz. The top of the third inning was big for the Golden Tornadoes as they tacked on four more runs off four hits. Loras added one more run in the bottom of the fifth after Vanessa Oliva scored on an error by the catcher. Geneva College added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning. Loras tallied one more run in the bottom of the seventh inning but the Golden Tornadoes' six-run lead was too much for the Duhawks to overcome handing Loras a 10-5 loss.
In the second game of the day, the Cardinals jumped out to an early lead scoring two runs but the Duhawks answered with three runs of their own in the top of the second after Taylor Donnell hit a 2 RBI single to center field scoring Madison Franks and Bergholz. The bottom of the third inning was big for the Cardinals as they added eight runs to their total giving them a 10-3 advantage heading into the fourth inning. Donnell grounded out to the shortstop scoring C Hansen in the process during top of the fourth inning. The Duhawks scored one more run in the top of the seventh inning but the Cardinals' already established lead allowed them to close out the game with a 11-6 victory.
The Duhawks will play two games on Sat. March 21, with the first game set to start at 2:00 PM against Olivet College followed by a 4:00 PM, start versus North Park University.
