Sept. 12, 2020 – A week's worth of rain finally gave way on Saturday afternoon and the Loras College women's tennis team (1-0) was able to open the 2020 fall season with an 8-1 win against Coe College (1-1) in front of a socially-distanced home crowd at Tucker Tennis Courts.
The Duhawks swept doubles play with
Noely Baumann and freshman
Clair Moore defeating Coe's Sophia Craig and Mikayla Heath 8-4 at the No. 3 position before
Lauren Diiulio and
Sara Backus scored an 8-6 victory against Emma Lassen and Michaela Pinto at the No. 2 spot. Slick court conditions gave
Audrey Hinz and
Maddie Smith's No. 1 position match a short intermission but the Duhawks rebounded back from the break to defeat Eliza Sundermann and Janie Lapray, 8-1.
In singles, Moore scored her first collegiate singles win against Pinto at No. 5 (6-1, 6-2) and Diiulio added a win at No. 3 singles against Craig by a score of 6-0, 6-1. Hinz gave Loras the win at the No. 1 position, defeating Lassen 6-1, 6-3 and Baumann won her match at No. 6 against Kaylei Dukes, 6-2, 6-1. Backus battled back after being 0-1 to start at No. 4 against Lapray to win the second set 7-6 and the tiebreaker 10-3.
The Duhawks host Luther College on Tuesday, Sept. 15 at Tucker Tennis Courts. Matches begin at 1 P.M.
