DECORAH, Iowa (Oct. 12, 2021) - Playing in their third game in a week's span, the Loras College men's soccer team (7-5-2, 2-2-1 A-R-C) traveled to Decorah, Iowa to face the Luther College Norse (9-4-1, 4-0-1 A-R-C) in an American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) heavyweight tilt. The Duhawks struck first in the early moments of the game but the Norse forced overtime where the score remained at a stalemate to see the game end in a draw.
Juan Jose Arias Mondragon notched the first goal of the game as the ball was thrown in from the sideline and was intercepted by the Norse, but a bad touch put the ball at Arias Mondragon's feet where he touched it to himself and hit a stunning volley into the top right corner of the net past Norse keeper Carson Davenport to put Loras up 1-0 at the half.
The Duhawks held on to the lead through the majority of the second half as the two teams grinded out a physical battle on both sides of the ball, but the equalizer found the back of the net in the 83rd minute on a Norse corner that found the head of Javier Pastor Valls to force the game into overtime.
After two overtime periods came and went, the score remained at an even 1-1 to see the game end in a tie, giving the Duhawks their second draw of the season.
The game was a physical one, seeing six yellow cards issued in the 110 minutes with both teams each receiving three apiece. Arias Mondragon's goal marked his seventh of the season to put him atop the team in points on the season with 18 on seven goals and four assists. Defensively, senior goalkeeper
Connor Fitzpatrick impressed in net, making eight saves on nine shots on goal from the Norse.
The Duhawks are back in action on Friday, Oct. 15 as they welcome Wisconsin-neighboring foe the University of Wisconsin - Platteville Pioneers to the Rock Bowl. The game is set to kick off at 7:30 PM.
