Oct. 23, 2021 - Riding high on the momentum from Wednesday night's dramatic mid-week victory over Wartburg College, the Loras College men's soccer team (9-6-2, 4-2-1 A-R-C) returned to their home turf to square off against the Beavers from Buena Vista University (2-11-2, 0-6-1 A-R-C) in a conference bout. Senior
Kyler Donovan celebrated Senior Day with a team-leading two goals in the game, marking his first multi-goal game of his career for the purple and gold, helping lead the Duhawks to an 8-0 victory.
Felipe Ramirez kicked things off for the Duhawks in the 27th minute as
Juan Jose Arias Mondragon took a corner and put a cross into the box, seeing the pass deflect off a Buena Vista defender and into Ramirez's lap to rifle a shot into the upper corner of the net to put the Duhawks up 1-0.
Minutes later,
Matthew Williams net his first career goal for Loras as four different attackers took shots before
Alex Beausoleil took a shot that bounced off of a Beavers defender and back to Williams to tuck into the back of the net to put the Duhawks up 2-0 going into the half.
Energized from half time, the Duhawks put the pedal to the floor on the attack, scoring their first goal of the half in the 50th minute as
Jose Cardenas found
Jared Block who touched the ball to Donovan for his first goal of the game.
In the 62nd minute,
Michael Brandt scored his second goal of the season as
Jose Melo put a cross into the box where Donovan headed a pass to Brandt who used his head to put the ball past Buena Vista goalkeeper Isaiah Thomas and widen the Duhawks' lead to 4-0.
Donovan's second goal of the game came moments later in the 65th minute as Melo again put a ball into the box where Donovan again connected and put the Duhawks up by five before
Patrick Clancy had his turn to score four minutes later in the 69th minute on an assist from Williams.
With two assists under his belt already in the game, Melo joined in on the scoring as senior defender
Michael Pifer put a perfect long ball into the box for Melo who brought the score to a comfortable 7-0 in the 79th minute for his first goal of the seaosn.
Jared Block tallied his third goal of the season as freshman
Owen Ivanuck lined up for a free kick and found Block in the box to put the ball home and secure the 8-0 shutout win.
Senior goalkeepers
Connor Fitzpatrick and
Seth Kurzynski came together for the combined shutout while offensively, the Duhawks hammered the net with 33 total shots in the game with 19 reaching net all while holding the Beavers to one lone off-target shot in the game.
The Duhawks return to the Rock Bowl on Tuesday, Oct. 26 as they go toe-to-toe with the Coe College Kohawks in the annual Latinx Night game. The first 50 fans in attendance will receive a free "Somos Duhawks" shirt. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 PM inside the Rock Bowl.
