Oct. 23, 2021 – The Loras College women's volleyball team (17-9 5-3 A-R-C) honored their senior class of
Dani Broeker,
Liz Fleckenstein,
Moira Mixan,
Krystal Tranel and
Lyndsi Wilgenbusch in the best way on Saturday afternoon, seeing the seniors put on a show with a 3-0 win against Buena Vista University (9-10, 2-5 A-R-C) to claim the second three-set sweep in as many days.
The Beavers put up the first points of the match but the senior trio of Fleckenstein, Wilgenbusch and Mixan helped the Duhawks reset and get on pace to take the lead, 9-6. Both teams battled back an forth through the heart of the first set until an attacking error from the Beavers opened the door for the Duhawks to close out the set with a six-point run led by a kill by Mixan, two from Fleckenstein and an ace by
Sam Stoffregen, taking the first set 25-14.
Fleckenstein opened the second set with a kill to spark Wilgenbusch hitting a pair and
Cat Gleason serving up an ace to lead 4-1. Buena Vista rallied back to tie it 6-6 but Fleckenstein again helped get a four-point streak going to lead 10-6. The Beavers remained persistent and tied the score two more times but Fleckenstein stopped their momentum with two kills, followed by Gleason with a kill and an ace by
Sara Hoskins to take a 20-16 lead. Wilgenbusch hit a kill to bring the Duhawks to set point and though Buena Vista fought to keep the set going longer, Mixan ended it with a kill, taking the second set 25-20.
Loras wnt out with an early 7-2 lead to open the third set and soon doubled up the Beavers, 12-6, off a kill by
Olivia Smith. Buena Vista capitalized on a two service errors to try and stay in the set, but Gleason served up her second ace of the match to keep the Duhawks' distance, 18-9. Buena Vista scored four points to bring it closer, 13-20, but Fleckenstein helped Loras pull away for match point with a kill at 24-16 and Mixan hit the game-winning kill at 25-17.
Fleckenstein had a team-high 19 kills in the Duhawks' win while fellow senior Wilgenbusch had 13. Mixan and Gleason both had two service aces while Hoskins and Smith tallied a pair of blocks each. Hoskins added 35 assists and 12 digs while Tranel, who sits third all-time in career digs, led all players with 23. The Duhawks held a .313 hitting percentage and seven total service aces to fuel the Senior Day win.
Loras is back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 26, hosting a non-conference match against Monmouth College. First serve is set for 7 P.M. inside the Lillis Athletic and Wellness Center.
