WINONA, Minn. (Mar. 6, 2021) – The Loras College men's tennis team (2-2) forced multiple tough matches against Saint Mary's University (Minn.) (1-1) on Saturday but ultimately fell 7-2 at the hands of the Cardinals.
Saint Mary's opened with a win at the No. 3 position in doubles play before two marathon matches ensued at the No. 1 and 2 positions.
Kevin Blomquist and
Thomas Kampmier outlasted Trevor Smiley and Brandon Kurilla for an 8-7 win, but despite a back-and-forth affair between the pairs of
Tommy Linkenheld and
Konnor Barth and Evan Huemoeller and Josh Janssen, the Cardinals took a narrow 8-7 win at No. 2, holding a 2-1 lead going into singles play.
Singles play followed suit to the tune of doubles with multiple competitive matches coming down to extra sets. Blomquist scored his second win of the day after a 7-6, 6-1 win against Huemoeller at No. 1, but the Cardinals swept the other five positions to seal the team win. Kampmier and Eain Coad both had competitive matches at No. 5 and 6 singles, respectively, forcing their opponents to take the match to the tiebreaker.
The Duhawks are back in action with nonconference competition on Tuesday, Mar. 9, playing the University of Northwestern (Minn.) at noon in Clinton, Iowa.
