CLINTON, Iowa (Mar. 9, 2021) – Taking a lead after doubles play and never looking back, the Loras College women's tennis team improved to 5-4 on the season with a 6-3 win against the University of Northwestern (Minn.) (3-2) on Tuesday afternoon.
Audrey Hinz and
Lauren Diiulio started the afternoon off with an 8-2 win against Mafee Rinta and Belinda Weddle at the No. 1 position but the Eagles came back to win the No. 3 match and tie the score, 1-1.
Sara Backus and
Clair Moore shifted the momentum back to the Duhawks with an 8-4 win against Jessica Gross and Ellie Dodge at No. 2 to hold a 2-1 lead going into singles play.
Diiulio kept the wins coming at No. 3 singles with a quick 6-1, 6-1 win against Gross and Backus followed with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 5 against Sabrina Bush to extend Loras' lead, 4-1. Northwestern took the No. 6 match but Moore clinched the win for the Duhawks after rebounding back from a first set setback against Dodge at No. 4 to win the next set 6-4 and the tiebreaker, 10-4. The Eagles came back to win a tiebreaker match at No. 2 but Hinz added another win at No. 1 against Rinta, 6-2, 6-0 to seal the win for Loras.
The Duhawks are back in action on Saturday, Mar. 13 against Wisconsin Lutheran College. A location and time is to be announced.
