Apr. 13, 2021 - The Loras College men's soccer team (4-0-2, 4-0-2 A-R-C) recorded their fourth win of the season Tuesday night as they played host to American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) rival Wartburg College (3-2-0, 3-2-0 A-R-C) at the Rock Bowl. A heavy first half attack saw the Duhawks put three goals on the board to glide past the Knights in a 3-1 victory.
The Duhawks scored first in the tenth minute of the match on a Wartburg foul that put the Duhawks on a free kick. The set piece went up in search for the head of
Patrick Clancy, but went into the back of the net off of a Knights defender for an own goal to give Loras a 1-0 advantage early.
Tigrio Huerta struck in the 32nd minute as
Tommy Schmitt charged the ball down field to place a pass at the feet of
Reed Miklavcic, who earned A-R-C Offensive Player of the Week honors this week after posting his first career hat trick against Buena Vista. Miklavcic caught the pass and immediately found Huerta for the second goal of the half to put the Duhawks up by two. Eight minutes later, Miklavcic had his turn to score on a perfect pass from
Jose Cardenas to go ahead by three goals at the half.
Wartburg added one goal of their own in the 72nd minute but it wasn't enough to catch up to the Duhawks as they held on to the 3-1 lead at the end of regulation.
The match was a physical one, seeing a total of 33 fouls and eight yellow cards with five going to Loras and three to Wartburg. The Duhawks outshot the Knights 16-9 in the match, posting three shots on net.
Huerta led the Duhawks with four shots on the night with one goal. Miklavcic added a goal and an assist for Loras while Schmitt and Cardenas had a helper apiece.
Jared Block,
Kevin Kucaba and Clancy each had three shots on the night while
Juan Jose Arias Mondragon took two.
Seth Kurzynski made the start in net for the Duhawks and put in a full 90 minutes of work, allowing only one goal with six saves on the night.
The Duhawks are set to take on the Coe College Kohawks on Friday, Apr. 16 at Clark Field in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The match is slated to kick off at 7:30 PM.
