DE PERE, WIS. (Sept. 1, 2021) – The Loras College men's soccer team (0-0-1) saw four players score in the Duhawks' season-opener at St. Norbert College on Wednesday but the Green Knights (0-0-1) responded to Loras' late run to notch the score, 4-4 and force a double-overtime draw.
St. Norbert took the lead to open the contest, scoring in the 12th and 17th minutes but
Reed Miklavcic found an open
Kevin Kucaba for the Duhawks' first score of the game in the 21st minute before
Juan Jose Arias Mondragon scored the tying goal in the 26th minute. The Green Knights added one more in the first half to hold a 3-2 lead going into the break.
Both teams battled back and forth in the second half before the Duhawks drew a penalty kick and
Jared Block converted to tie the game back up, 3-3, in the 70th minute. Just over 30 seconds later, the Duhawks got another penalty shot attempt, this time taken by
Alex Beausoleil, and the junior sent it past the goalkeeper to give Loras its first lead in the 71st minute. St. Norbert did not go down without a fight and tied the game back up in the 88th minute, forcing an overtime thriller nail-biter to start the 2021 campaign.
Both teams kept the other from getting any offense rolling in the first overtime and held steadfast through the second period, leaving the score dead locked 4-4 as time expired.
The Duhawks and Green Knights were nearly even on shots in the game with Loras holding an 8-7 edge in shots on goal. Goalkeepers
Connor Fitzpatrick and
Seth Kurzynski both saw time in goal in the opener with each recording one save.
The Duhawks host the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Friday, Sept. 3 inside the Rock Bowl at 5:00 P.M.
