Sept. 13, 2021 - After the game was pushed back a day from the original scheduled time, the Loras College men's soccer team 4-1-1 (0-0-0 A-R-C) played host to the Fighting Scots from Monmouth College (0-1-0, 0-0-0 Midwest) at the Rock Bowl Monday night. Sophomore forward
Reed Miklavcic posted his first two goals of the season, both within five minutes of each other to help the Duhawks soar past the Scots for their fourth win of the season.
The first half was relatively quiet in terms of balls finding the back of the net, but the Loras offense pounded the net throughout the full 90 minutes. In the first half alone the Duhawks rifled off a total of 12 shots while holding Monmouth to zero shots but nothing materialized for either side as the game stayed scoreless at the half.
The drought ended early in the second half, however, after
Diego Rodriguez tallied his first goal of the season on a rebounded shot off of Monmouth goalkeeper Marcos Garibay. Rodriguez positioned himself perfectly in front of the net to field the rebound and bury the shot to take a 1-0 lead after 49 minutes.
Miklavcic's first goal of the night came in the 72nd minute as
Matthew Williams and
Diego Lopez charged the ball down the field with Williams feeding Miklavcic a great centering ball that shot off his foot to give Loras a two goal advantage.
Michael Brandt joined the scoring party five minutes later in the 77th minute of the game as
Juan Jose Arias Mondragon set up for a corner kick that sailed into the box and off the head of Brandt for his first goal of the season.
Mere moments later, Miklavcic took advantage of another scoring opportunity set up by Brandt for his second goal of the night with Brandt adding an assist to his name in the match.
The Duhawks owned the game offensively, outshooting the Scots 31-3 with 21 shots on goal while holding them scoreless to give senior goalkeeper
Connor Fitzpatrick his first clean sheet of the season. Miklavcic led the Loras offense with two goals on the night while Brandt added a goal and an assist and Rodriguez with one goal to his name. Williams and Mondragon each posted an assist in the game.
Loras returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 18 as they welcome the Millikin University Big Blue to the Rock Bowl. The game is scheduled to kick off at 7:30 PM.
