Sept. 22, 2021 - The Loras College women's tennis team (1-3, 0-2 A-R-C) was back in action at Tucker Tennis Courts on Wednesday night as they faced the Rams from Cornell College (2-6, 1-2 Midwest) in a nonconference dual. The Duhawks earned their first victory of the fall in dominant fashion, sweeping the Rams by a 9-0 final score.
The Duhawks got off to a hot start in doubles action as
Sara Backus and
Dorothy Deans took an 8-6 match win over Cornell's Emmaline Fievet and Amanda Dragon. In the No. 2 doubles matchup,
Clair Moore and
Alex Oestreich faced Ashley Mink and Makayla Johnson, taking a commanding 8-2 match victory. The doubles sweep rounded out in a Cornell forfeit in the No. 3 doubles match.
In singles play,
Lauren Diiulio took on Fievet in No. 1 singles, where the match went into three sets after Diiulio won the first 6-2 before Fievet came back to take the second 6-4, but Diiulio came back to win 10-7 for the win. No. 2 singles saw
Isabel Schwabe defeat Johnson 6-0, 6-1 and in No. 3 Moore took down Cornell's Mink 6-2, 6-1. Backus rounded out singles play in the No. 4 match against Dragon, winning 6-4, 6-1 with the final two singles matches going to the Duhawks on forfeits.
The Duhawks return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 28 as they travel to Waverly, Iowa to take on American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) foe Wartburg College. The match is scheduled to begin at 4:00 PM at the Meirink Family Tennis Facility.
