LINCOLN, Neb. (Sept. 25, 2021) - In the third and final Nebraska Wesleyan versus Loras showdown of the day, the Loras College men's soccer team (6-2-1, 1-0-0 A-R-C) earned their first American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) victory over the Nebraska Wesleyan University Prairie Wolves (3-4-1, 0-1-0 A-R-C) Saturday night. After a scoreless first half,
Juan Jose Arias Mondragon helped secure the win with his first career two-goal performance wearing the purple and gold.
Though the score remained at a scoreless gridlock at the half time mark, the Duhawks' offense was anything but quiet as they rifled off seven shots in the first half to the Prairie Wolves' three. It wasn't until the second half, however, that the Duhawks broke through on a corner kick by
Tigrio Huerta that bounced around in the box and found the back of the net past Nebraska Wesleyan goalkeeper Zachary Weis to go up 1-0 in the 48th minute.
Five minutes later, Arias Mondragon scored his first of the night on an unassisted missile of a shot into the back of the net to quickly take a two-goal advantage in the 52nd minute. The senior from Cali, Colombia struck again in the closing minutes of the game as
Kevin Kucaba fielded a pass and dished a perfect through ball into the box to Arias Mondragon who dribbled past Weis for his second goal of the night to take the 3-0 lead and open conference play with a win.
Loras fired off nine shots on goal in the game while holding the Prairie Wolves to just one, in which senior goalkeeper
Connor Fitzpatrick made the save to earn his third shutout win. Arias Mondragon's two-goal night brings his total to five on the year while Donovan's marks his second.
The Duhawks are back in action Wednesday, Sept. 29 as they travel to Whitewater, Wis. to seek vengeance on the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks after falling in double overtime this past Wednesday. The game is scheduled to kick off at 7:00 PM.
