PLATTEVILLE, Wis. (Oct. 1, 2022) – Loras College's men's soccer team didn't have an answer for a steady University of Wisconsin-Platteville defense on Saturday night as the Pioneers outpaced the Duhawks 3-1.
The Duhawks (5-4) had a handful of solid scoring chances in the game, including seven corner kicks, but couldn't sneak one in against the Pioneers (8-2-1). Loras was the beneficiary of an own goal by the Pioneers in the 87
th minute, but that came after a trio of Pioneer goals had put the game away.
Platteville took the lead late in the first half as a foul in the box gave Sebastian Carranza a penalty kick chance in the 43
rd minute. That late goal came just minutes after a Loras corner kick that nearly worked out as senior midfielder
Matthew Williams had a shot saved by the Pioneer defense.
The Pioneers added on with a Lucas Godon goal in the 62
nd minute to make it a 2-0 lead. Senior midfielder
Kevin Kucaba had a free kick chance for Duhawks just a few minutes later, but his shot was saved by Seth Aiken to again spoil one the Duhawks' better scoring chances.
Carranza added Platteville's third goal in the 77
th minute before the late own goal that got Loras on the board, solidifying the Pioneers' seventh win in a row.
The Duhawks fired only eight shots in the match, but made the most of them as four were on target. They also earned one more corner kick chance than the Pioneers.
This match concluded the non-conference portion of the schedule for the Duhawks as they return to American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) play this Wednesday, Oct. 5, when they host Luther College at 7:30 P.M.
