MOUNT VERNON, Iowa (Feb. 5, 2022) – The Loras College men's tennis team (1-3) opened the 2022 spring season with a pair of matches against Cornell College (1-1) and Northwestern College (5-1) but fell to both foes inside the Small Sports Center in Mount Vernon.
In the first match of the day, the Duhawks went up against the Rams and took two of the three doubles matches to the tiebreaker.
Kevin Blomquist and
Thomas Kampmier battled Alexander Hadler and Justin Mendez to take the 8-7 win after the tiebreaker but Cornell came away with the win at the No. 2 spot and outlasted the Duhawks at the No. 3 spot to take a 2-1 lead heading into singles play. Cornell kept rolling with four wins in singles to seal the 6-3 win but the Duhawks celebrated victories for
Joe Schneider at No. 5, defeating Michael Coester, 6-0, 6-0 and
Kareem Kassas defeated Orion Mason at No. 6, 6-2, 6-2.
Against Northwestern, the Raiders took an early 2-1 lead in doubles but
Sean Gelski and
Nolan Teubel denied brothers Jack and Noah Rosium at the No. 3 position, winning 8-5. Northwestern sealed the match, 7-2, after winning the first three singles matches but Kassas scored his second win of the day with a 6-1, 6-3 decision against N. Rosium at the No. 6 slot.
The Duhawks travel to Winona, Minn. for a pair of matches at Saint Mary's University on Saturday, Feb. 19, playing the University of Wisconsin-Superior first and the host Cardinals in the evening. Matches begin at noon.
