Apr. 23, 2022 – The Loras College men's tennis team (10-8, 4-3 A-R-C) split a pair of American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) on Saturday against Central College (9-8, 5-3 A-R-C) and Simpson College (4-12, 3-6 A-R-C), falling to the Dutch 6-3 but rebounding for an 8-1 win against the Storm in the second match of the afternoon at the Tucker Tennis Courts.
After the Dutch pulled ahead 2-0 in doubles play,
Kevin Blomquist and
Thomas Kampmier scored an 8-6 nail biter at the No. 1 position to thwart Central's momentum. The Duhawks kept it rolling in singles action as
Konnor Barth and
Eian Coad secured wins at the No. 5 and 6 positions to take a 3-2 lead. Coad won his match at No. 6 singles, 7-6, 6-0 against Caleb Hamerlinck and Barth defeated Matthew Den Adel, 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 5 spot. The Dutch found their groove through the remainder of the matches and posted four-straight wins to take the match, 6-3.
As the temperature rose and wind gusts continued in full force for the second match of the day, the Duhawks also got hot, starting with a sweep of doubles play to take the early 3-0 lead. Blomquist and Kampmier remained perfect on the day with an 8-4 win at No. 1 against Caleb Vasconez and Aaron Pierce while
Tommy Linkenheld and Barth defeated Peter Walkwitz and Ethan Humble in a tightly-contest 8-7 match at No. 2.
Sean Gelski and
Kareem Kassas picked up an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles against Drake Downard and Jake Brend to give Loras momentum into singles action.
The Storm only came away with one win in singles play at the No. 3 spot but the Duhawks took command to win the other five in a dominant 8-1 showing. Blomquist defeated Vasconez, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 and Kampmier defeated Walkwitz in a marathon 5-7, 6-4, 10-8 battle at No. 2. Kassas took down Humble, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 and both Barth and Coad collected their second singles wins of the day at No. 5 and 6, respectively. Barth defeated Downard 6-1, 6-0 and Coad added a 6-0, 6-1 win to his growing total as he leads the Duhawks with 13 wins in singles play and is one shy of his single-season record.
The Duhawks wrap up regular season action on Thursday, Apr. 28, hosting Wartburg College.
