ST. PETER, Minn. (Sept. 11, 2022) – Loras College's men's soccer team looked to be on its way to another statement win on Sunday afternoon, but a late comeback from (RV) Gustavus Adolphus College dealt the Duhawks their first loss of the 2022 season.
Loras (3-1) took an early lead and held onto that margin for more than 75 minutes of game action, but the Gusties somehow collected three goals in a two-minute span in the final seven minutes of the game to stave off an upset attempt from the Duhawks.
The Duhawks wasted no time getting the early advantage as senior forward
Felipe Ramirez cashed in on a goal in the seventh minute. It was Ramirez's first points of the season and came just a few minutes shy of also serving as the game-winning goal for Loras.
The Gusties, who entered the game at 2-0-2 and were receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Preseason Poll, tallied the equalizer in the 83
rd minute on a goal from Nicholas Whiteman. Just over a minute later, Jared Hecht put the Gusties ahead with another goal before Alexander Krumenauer added an insurance goal in the 85
th minute.
That late scoring stunned the Duhawks and sent them on their way back to Dubuque with their first loss of the season. Those three goals are the first three goals the team has allowed this season after starting 3-0 with three consecutive shutouts.
Loras will get a full week of preparation for their next match as they get ready to host Illinois Wesleyan University on Saturday, Sept. 17, inside the Rock Bowl at 7 P.M.
