Sept. 17, 2022 – Loras College's men's soccer team is making a habit of this sort of thing as the Duhawks claimed their third 1-0 victory of the season by taking down Illinois Wesleyan University on Saturday night.
The Duhwaks (4-1) got back in the win column after a gut-wrenching defeat at Gustavus Adolphus College last weekend, notching a nerve-wracking victory over the Spartans (3-2-1) thanks to senior midfielder
Michael Brandt's first goal of the season. It's the third time this young season that the Duhawks have won a game by a final score of 1-0.
Loras had a couple of close calls early in the contest, but finally cashed in in the 11
th minute when freshman forward
Taylor Sowell fired a low shot that was saved by Titans keeper Spencer Fulton. Fulton couldn't secure the ball, allowing Brandt to fire off a shot of his own on the rebound, beating Fulton high for what turned out to be the game-winning score.
The Duhawks managed to squeak out the victory despite a solid late press from the Titans as the opposition fired off seven shots in the final minute of play, but none found the back of the net on the east end of the Rock Bowl soccer field.
Senior goalkeeper
Owen Johnson made two saves during the Titans' late push and totaled four for the game. The two sides played even at 12 shots apiece while the Duhawks managed only two shots on goal for the contest, both coming during the sequence that led to Brandt's early goal.
Physicality was on full display as well as the game saw a total of 20 fouls and four yellow cards.
Loras is back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 21, when the Duhawks travel to play at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at 7 P.M.
