Sept. 3, 2022 – The Loras College women's tennis team (0-1) matched up with a competitive University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (1-0) squad on Saturday in the Duhawks' season opener, forcing four singles matches to extra points before ultimately falling 8-1 at the hands of the Pointers.
The duo of
Isabel Schwabe and
Lauren Diiulio secured the sole victory on the day in doubles play, defeating Quinlyn Mack and Tristin Jantz 8-6 at the No. 1 spot. In singles action, Schwabe battled with Mack at the No. 1 spot, bouncing back from a first set 6-3 loss to take the second, 7-5, but fell short 6-2 in the tiebreaker.
Sara Backus fought back against Barbara Covek at the No. 4 position, rebounding from a 6-4 loss in the first set to take the second, 6-2. Covek came back to take the tiebreaker, 6-2.
Caroline Hutchinson had a hard-fought battle at No. 5 singles, taking the second set against Maya Kunze, 6-4 after Kunze won the first, 6-3, and the pair duked it out in the tiebreaker, ultimately come down to a 10-8 win for Kunze.
Leia Papanicholas opened up her match at No. 6 singles with a 6-4 win before Brooklyn Steier flipped the scrip with a 6-4 win in the second set and the two went through a marathon tiebreaker to decide a winner with Steier taking the final set 13-11.
The Duhawks have a quick turnaround with the next match slated for Monday, Sept. 5 at St. Ambrose University. Matches in Davenport, Iowa are set to begin at 12 P.M.
