DAVENPORT, Iowa (Sept. 5, 2022) – Dominating doubles play and securing a string of wins in singles action propelled the Loras College women's tennis team (1-1) to a 6-1 win at St. Ambrose University (2-1) on Monday. The win marked the fourth-straight victory for the Duhawks in the series with the Bees.
The match was played in single-win format for doubles, meaning the team that came away with two or more wins in those matches collected one team point rather than each match scoring independently. The Bees took the No. 1 match but
Dorothy Deans and
Sara Backus cruised to a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles against Julia Turek and Paige Bily and
Caroline Hutchinson and
Clair Moore defeated Kate Jones and Hayley Hoffmann, 6-3, at the No. 3 spot to lock up the doubles point for the Duhawks.
In singles play,
Isabel Schwabe won the No. 1 match against Turek, 6-1, 6-2 and
Lauren Diiulio defeated Maggie Sullivan 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 to get Loras rolling. Backus scored a 6-1, 6-2 win against Bily at No. 4 singles and Hutchinson made quick work of Hoffman at No. 5 singles with a 6-1, 6-0 win.
Leia Papanicholas defeated Megan McConnaughay, 6-2, 7-5 at No. 6 singles and though St. Ambrose took the win at No. 3 singles, Moore forced Kaylee Camp to the tiebreaker to decide the match.
The Duhawks host a non-conference matchup against Edgewood College on Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 4 P.M at the Tucker Tennis Courts before starting American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) action on Saturday, Sept. 10 against Coe College.
