Sept. 7, 2022 – The Loras College women's tennis team (2-1) clinched a hard-fought 6-3 win against Edgewood College (0-3) on Wednesday, coming back in the late singles matches to defeat the Eagles.
The Eagles took the first doubles match of the afternoon at the No. 1 position but the Duhawks took the lead, 2-1, following an 8-5 win for
Sara Backus and
Dorothy Deans at No. 2 against Jewel Lindwall and Maddy Coopmans.
Leia Papanicholas and
Caroline Hutchinson battled to an 8-6 win at the No. 3 spot against Evelyn Taylor and Madelyn Connaughty to put Loras up heading into singles play.
Edgewood tied the match 2-2 with a win at No. 1 singles but it was short lived as
Lauren Diiulio took back the lead with a 6-3, 6-4 win against Lindwall at the No. 2 spot. Edgewood took the No. 3 match to knot it again before the Duhawks ran away with the match as Hutchinson defeated Coopmans, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5 singles and Backus locked up the match with her 7-5, 7-6 win against Taylor at No. 4 singles. Papanicholas added the finishing touch with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles against Chirstina Ekkela as the Duhawks moved to 2-1 on the young season.
The Duhawks look to carry the momentum into the first American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) match of the season on Saturday, Sept. 10, hosting Coe College at the Tucker Tennis Courts. Match play begins at 1 P.M.
