Duhawks Dismantle Beavers, 49-21

STORM LAKE, Iowa – For the fourth time this season, the Loras College Duhawks put up 40-plus points in a 49-21 victory over Buena Vista University on a snowy Saturday afternoon inside J. Leslie Rollins Stadium.

The victory is the sixth-straight for Loras (4-4 overall, 3-3 A-R-C) over the Beavers (1-7, 1-5), dating back to 2017.

Quarterback Evan England had a banner day, accounting for five touchdowns. Three of his scores came through the air, where the junior completed 18 of his 33 pass attempts for 209 yards. The Wheaton, Ill. native rushed for 61 yards and his other two scores on nine attempts. England now has 48 touchdown passes in his career, placing him one shy of tying third all-time at Loras.

Wideout Mani Brown had his second three-touchdown performance of the season, racking up 123 yards on eight receptions. With the three scores today, Brown becomes Loras' all-time single season record holder for touchdown receptions at 15.

On the ground, Jamel Britt led the way with 65 yards and a score, with Johnnie Cason II adding in 42 to give Loras 168 yards on the day.

Defensively, Brandon Phelps had a career day, racking up five tackles for loss and three sacks, while also forcing a fumble that the junior out of Morris, Ill. returned 45 yards for a touchdown. Elijah Dertz had his best game of the season, racking up two sacks and six total tackles, five of which came solo.

The Duhawks struck first when an eight-play, 68-yard drive resulted in England finding Brown for their first score of the contest, a five-yard hookup merely two and a half minutes into the game. The Duhawks added on to the lead when the duo connected again only two minutes later, this time from 10 yards out to go up 14-0.

The Beavers responded by cuttting into the deficit with 4:55 seconds remaining into the quarter off of a touchdown pass from Zach Herrera to Eman Alaniz for a 14 yards. The Duhawks answered with back-to-back touchdown runs from England to go up 28-7 at the break.

BVU scored its second touchdown of the day on its first drive of the second half when Herrera and Alaniz connected on a 27-yard pitch and catch to make it 28-14. Loras came right back with a response of its own, as England found Brown for the third time on a 25-yard strike to regain the three-score lead.

With 4:17 to play, BVU's Caleb Green threw a touchdown to Alaniz to cut the deficit back to two scores, but Britt's 18-yard touchdown and Phelps' 45-yard scoop and score with 13 seconds to play slammed the door shut to give Loras its third conference victory of the season.

Up Next: Loras returns home for Senior Day next Saturday, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m. against Simpson College.
