CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Loras College women's tennis team suffered its first conference loss to Coe College 5-4 at the Clark Racquet Center on Wednesday afternoon.
Mary Breitbach and
Dorothy Deans secured an 8-6 victory over Maddie Schultz and Alliandra Hagness at No.1 doubles, while
Caroline Hutchinson and
Leia Papanicholas scored the other Loras point in doubles with an 8-5 win over Jaden Fuqua and Jania Carter-Johnson in the No. 2 spot. Courtney Cartensen and Chloe Palmer handed
Ellie Kalina and
Clair Moore the sole Duhawk loss in doubles play by a score of 4-8. The Duhawks held a 2-1 lead over the Kohawks after doubles play.
In singles action, Breitbach fell 3-6, 4-6 to Schultz at No. 1 singles, while Deans met a similar fate at No. 2 singles, falling 2-6, 0-6 to Sophia Fain. Hagness swept Hutchinson in the No. 3 spot, but Moore outlasted Claudia Bilkey at No.4 singles by scores of 6-2, 1-6 and 6-4 in the tiebreaker. Papanicholas tied the match up at 4-4 with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Carlie Miller at No.5 doubles, but Kalina was unable to clinch the victory for the Duhawks in her matchup against Palmer who took the No. 6 singles match by scores of 6-2, 6-2.
Loras holds an overall record of 7-2 and owns a 4-1 mark in A-R-C action.
Up Next: The Duhawks welcome Nebraska Wesleyan University and Buena Vista University to the Tucker Tennis Courts on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. respectively for a pair of conference matches.
