DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Loras College Duhawks (7-2-4 overall, 2-1 A-R-C) downed its cross-town rival in the University of Dubuque (4-7-1, 2-2), 3-1, in the Homecoming weekend finale Saturday night in the Rock Bowl.
The Duhawks came out firing in the first half with two shots in the first five minutes, with
Bryan Basinger's first at 3:19 coming on goal. It didn't take much longer for Loras to take the only lead it needed in the contest when
Reed Miklavcic scored off a penalty kick in the game's 12
th minute. Nine minutes later,
Owen Johnson made his first save of the night in the bottom left of the goal to preserve the lead.
In the 27
th minute, Miklavcic extended the Loras lead after scoring his second of the evening. Loras added its third and final goal in the 38
th minute when
Michael Brandt bended a ball just over the extended reach of UD's goalie to put the Duhawks up 3-0, a lead that they'd maintain until the 82
nd minute, when Dubuque got itself on the board with a goal scored by Gavin Wooldridge off an assist by Drew Wisdom.
Game Notes
- Despite the commanding 3-0 lead at the end of the first, the Duhawks managed to fire off six additional shots in the second half and held a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal.
- Loras also held an advantage in corner kicks at 7-6.
- The Duhawks have now two of its last three matchups with UD, with the only other contest ending in a 0-0 tie on Oct. 11, 2022.
Up Next: The Duhawks return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 10 in Waverly to face the Knights of Wartburg College. Match time is set for 7:30 p.m. at Salzwedel Field.
