DAVENPORT, Iowa - It didn't take long for
Grace Alley get back into her elite form, as the Seneca, Ill. native set a new national record in the pentathlon with a score of 3,986 , breaking a record that stood for nearly 10 years at the season-opening Finals Week Invite, hosted by Saint Ambrose University on Friday.
Amelia Campbell of Carleton College held the previous record of 3.914, a mark that was set on Mar. 8, 2014. In Alley's first pentathlon action of the season, she placed first in each event she competed in, starting out with the 60 meter hurdles where she closed out the race with a time of 9.26.
Following that, Alley competed in the high jump, where she broke her own school record with a mark of 1.74 meters (5'8.5"), adding 903 points to her total. Following the high jump was the shot put, where she threw for 11.87 meters (39'9").
In her first appearance of the year in the long jump, Alley set a new school record of 5.87 meters (19'3"), giving her 810 points. She closed out the pentathlon with the 800 meter race, where she won with a time of 2:24.43 to cement her status among the greatest of all time. Following competition, she now stands first nationally in the high jump and pentathlon, while being second in the long jump on the indoor qualifying lists.
Also competing tonight was Bridget Smith, who kicked off the indoor season with a final mark of 2,347 in her first pentathlon action of her collegiate career, which places her seventh all-time in the Loras record books. The freshman out of Moline, Ill. was ninth in the 60 meter hurdles (11.52), fifth in the high jump (1.47m), second in the shot put (10.36m), eighth in the long jump (4.62m), and ninth in the 800 meter (3:08.18).
