March 1, 2023 – No. 15 Loras College women's basketball has landed four student-athletes on the American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) all-conference teams with
Sami Martin and
Cierra Bachmann making the first team list and
Daniella Jarrell and
Madison Fleckenstein each earning second team honors.
These four have been instrumental to the Duhawks' successful 2022-23 season that has seen them go 23-4 overall with a 14-3 mark in A-R-C play. Their new top-15 ranking from Tuesday's D3hoops.com poll comes as a result of a 5-0 record against ranked opponents this season and a current 10-game winning streak that included a win at No. 24 Wartburg College in the A-R-C Tournament championship game.
That win has earned the Duhawks an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III National Tournament. Loras is the host of the first and second rounds this Friday-Saturday, March 3-4.
Martin is claiming her third straight All-Conference First Team honor after another season as one of the league's top players. The junior forward from Platteville, Wis. led the team in points per game (15.6) and rebounds per game (7.8) to rank second and fifth in the conference in those categories, respectively. She also ranked third in the league with a 54.9 shooting percentage from the field to rank as one of the most efficient players in the A-R-C. Martin was twice named as the A-R-C Player of the Week during the season.
Bachmann's presence for the Duhawks was as important as any down the stretch as she more than earned her third career all-conference honor, but her first career All-Conference First Team accolade. The senior guard from Channahon, Ill. averaged 11.6 points per game to rank second on the team and top-15 in the A-R-C. She was the team's leader in assists (68) and steals (64) as she ranked third in the conference in the latter. She received the first A-R-C Player of the Week honor of her career earlier this week after leading Loras to an A-R-C Tournament Championship with a game-high 23 points in the title game.
Despite missing games early in the season while still with the women's soccer team, Jarrell put up phenomenal numbers to earn Second Team All-Conference honors. In her season debut on Dec. 10, the sophomore guard from Vernon Hills, Ill. tallied what was then a career-high 12 points and handed out three assists as the Duhawks beat No. 9 University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Even with fewer games played than many of her teammates, Jarrell was second on the team in assists with 53 as her defensive efforts and overall energy has kept her in the starting lineup ever since her first start at Central College on Jan. 7.
Fleckenstein served as another consistent presence for the Duhawks this season as she earned Second Team All-Conference honors after being a first-teamer in 2021-22. The senior guard from Asbury, Iowa averaged 11.3 points per game to rank top-20 in the league while pulling down 127 rebounds, which is second-most on the team and top-20 in the A-R-C. Fleckenstein was one of Loras' best two-way players as she also ranked seventh in the conference in steals, totaling 43 and averaging over one per game. With 21 points and seven rebounds to lead Loras in an upset of No. 9 UW-Eau Claire on Dec. 10, Fleckenstein was named as the A-R-C Player of the Week for the third time in her career.
