HILTON HEAD, S.C. (March 16, 2023) – It's safe to say that the spring trip was a success for the Loras College men's tennis team as the Duhawks finished their run at the Spring Tennis Fest with a 4-0 record with all four wins coming fairly easily.
The Duhawks started their week with a
7-2 win over Maryville College before sweeping Oswego State 9-0 on Tuesday. Yesterday, Loras took down Western New England University 8-1 and beat Ramapo College 7-2 to improve to 4-0 on the trip and 7-4 on the 2022-23 season.
Loras 9, Oswego St. 0
The Duhawks' first 9-0 sweep of the season came at the expense of the Lakers as each singles and doubles match was decided in straight sets. The only drama to be see came at No. 3 doubles, as it featured a new Duhawk pairing.
Junior
Gannon Harrington and freshman
Luis Garcia teamed up for the first time as collegiate teammates and battled Oswego State's Zachary Demott and Liam Reira into a tiebreaker, with the Loras pairing emerging with a hard-fought 8-7 (10-8) win to secure the sweep.
Loras 8, WNEU 1
Loras nearly made it back-to-back sweeps as it took down the Golden Bears 8-1 with only a lone singles defeat for sophomore
Jeremiah Allen at No. 4 singles. Allen battled his was back after a 6-3 loss in set one to win 6-4 and force a decisive third set with WNEU's Michael Robichaud, who escaped Allen's charge with a 10-6 win in set three.
Freshmen
Gage Becker (No. 2),
Lucas Healy (No. 5), and sophomore
Henry Condo (No. 6) each had dominating singles displays to help Loras run away with this one. They combined to drop just one set over their three singles matches.
Loras 7, Ramapo 2
Perhaps the closest match of the week for Loras still produced a 7-2 victory as the Duhawks dropped only one singles and one doubles match to the Roadrunners. In doubles, the lone loss came from Healy and sophomore
Kareem Kassas, who battled Ramapo's Matthew Doran and Alejandro Pacheco into a tiebreaker before falling 8-7 (7-3).
Three of the six singles matches went into three sets in a well-balanced match between the two programs. After he and doubles partner
Konnor Barth took their match 8-5, senior
Kevin Blomquist took his No. 1 singles match down to the wire with Ramapo's Siddharth Byreddy. Blomquist took the first set 6-4 before falling 6-2 in the second but outlasted his Roadrunner opponent 10-8 in the third and decisive set.
The senior Barth enjoyed the largest win, singles or doubles, of the match as he beat Doran 6-1, 6-1 in at No. 3 singles.
The next time the Duhawks hit the courts will be in a home match at the Tucker Tennis Courts when they face Wartburg College in an American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) battle. That match is scheduled for Wednesday, March 29, at 3:30 P.M.
