Women's Volleyball Triumphs Over #14 Cornell

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Loras College women's volleyball team toppled nationally-ranked No. 14 Cornell College in three sets inside the Lillis Athletic and Wellness Center on Wednesday evening.
 
Loras (7-6 overall) jumped out to a 6-2 lead over the Rams in the beginning of the first set. The Rams were able to tie things up six times throughout the set, but for every Cornell point, the Duhawks had an answer. The purple and gold rattled off five-straight points to reclaim a 16-12 lead. The Rams went on a 5-0 run late in the set to cut the Duhawk lead to just two points (22-20), but Loras was able to close out the set on top by a score of 25-20.
 
In set two, both squads fought for every point with neither team leading by more than five at any point throughout the set. The Duhawks outlasted Cornell to take set two 25-23.

Cornell (8-2 overall) posted a 6-0 run to take a narrow three-point lead (14-11) midway through the third set. The Duhawks finally tied things up at 19 apiece, but the Rams responded with a 4-1 run to take a 23-20 lead. Loras persevered and closed out the final set with a 6-1 run to earn a 26-24 victory.
 
The Duhawks were led by Patrycja Jarzabek, who put down a game-high 13 kills. Sophie Younkin added in 10 kills and nine digs, while teammate Autumn Finch contributed eight kills and seven blocks in the win. Sara Hoskins totaled 36 assists, six blocks and 16 digs for the Duhawks as well. As a team, Loras hit .164, which featured 42 kills and 18 errors in 146 attempts.
 
Ella McLaughlin and Grace Marti led the Rams offense putting down eight kills apiece. Following closely behind were Ilah Perez-Johnson and Carly Puffer who added in seven kills each. Clare Green dished out 28 assists and totaled 11 digs, while Ella Becker posted a team-high 24 digs in the loss. As a team, Cornell hit .047, finishing with 32 kills and 25 errors in 150 attempts. 
 
Up Next: The Duhawks travel to La Crosse, Wis., tomorrow to face Edgewood College at 5:00 p.m. followed by UW-La Crosse at 7:00 p.m. in a triangular.
