WHITEWATER, Wis. – The Loras College women's tennis team took part in the ITA Regional Championship and the Midwest Invite hosted at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater this past weekend.
Mary Breitbach and
Dorothy Deans both went 1-1 over the course of the tournament. Breitbach took down Tristian Jantz of UW-Stevens Point 6-4 and 7-6 in the opening round, before falling 3-6, 6-2 and 10-6 in the tiebreaker to Anna Lee of UW-Eau Claire. Deans defeated UW-La Crosse's Avery Nicholson 6-2, 6-7 and won the tiebreaker 10-7, but dropped her match in the next round to Ashley Tarrolly of the College of St. Benedict 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles play, Breitbach and Deans soundly defeated Amanye Reynolds and Elizabeth Trevathan of Macalester College 8-4 but were unable to keep the momentum going as they fell in the next round to Pavla Yakimova and Brooke Haddorff of Gustavus Adolphus by a score of 8-1.
Caroline Hutchinson dropped her opening match to St. Benedict's Kira Young by scores of 3-6, 6-2 and 2-10 in the tiebreaker.
Ellie Kalina defeated Cornell's Isabella Wallin 7-5, 6-1 in her opening match, but fell 3-6, 1-6 to UW-Stevens Point's Brooklyn Steier in the quarterfinals.
Leia Papanicholas went 2-1 in the Singles-C category, taking down Carroll's Kaitlin Brandl 6-1, 4-6, and 10-5 in the tiebreaker to advance to the next round. She then handled Krya Hagen of UW-Stevens Point 3-6, 6-0 and won the tiebreaker once again 10-3 to put her in the semifinals. Brooke Beier of St. Benedict's handed Papanicholas a 6-4 and 6-2 loss to end her tournament run.
In the Singles-D bracket,
Jessie Yelaska suffered a 2-6 and 4-6 loss to Mia Andrae of Concordia-Wisconsin in the opening round.
Clair Moore earned a first-round bye but lost her quarterfinal match to Avrie Morris of UW-La Crosse by scores of 1-6 and 2-6.
Moore and Kalina came out on top in the round of 16 against Julia Huseth and Hailey Toole of UW-Eau Claire by a score of 8-4. The pair went on to fall 1-8 in the next match to Kira Young and Greta Nesbit of St. Benedict's. Hutchinson and Papanicholas toppled MSOE's Katie Ross and Kelsey Collins 8-0 in the first round of doubles play, but eventually fell to Sofia Buhr and Mya Werning of Concordia-Wisconsin by a score of 3-8.
